At the 1990 Rotary International Convention in Portland, Oregon then President-elect Paulo Costa told the gathered Rotarians, “The hour has come for Rotary to raise its voice, to claim its leadership and to rouse all Rotarians to an honorable crusade to protect our natural resources.  “He declared a Rotary initiative to “Preserve Planet Earth.” asking Rotarians to make envirnmental issues part of their service agenda: to plant trees, to work to keep our air and water clean, and to protect the planet for future generations.

President Costa asjed tgat ibe tree be okabted fir eacg if tge 1.1 million members that Rotary had at the time.  We Rotarians, as is our wont, did better planting nearly 35 million trees by the end of the Rotary year.  Many of those trees are likely still flourishing today, absorbing carbon from the environment, releasing oxygen, cooling the air improving soil quality, providing habitat and food for birds, animals, and insects, and yielding a host of other benefits.  Unfortunately, while those trees have kept on doing good for the environment, Rotary as a whole has not carried its environmental commitment forwards.

That is why, at the start of this year I followed Paulo Costa’s example and asked Rotary to plat at least one tree for every Rotary member.  My goal was to achieve a good beyond the considerable benefits that those 1.2 million (or more!) treeswould themselves bring.  It is my hope that by planting trees, Rotarians wil renew their interest in, and attention to, an issue that we must put back on the Rotary agenda: the state of our planet.

Environmental issues are deeply entwined in every one of our areas of focus and cannot be dismissed as not Rotary’s concern.  Pollution is affecting health across the globe: More than 80 percent of people in urban areas breathe unsafe air, a number that rises to 98 percent in low- and middle-income countries.  If current trends continue, by 2050 the oceans are expected to contain more plastics by weight than fish.  And rising temperatures are well-documented: Global annual average temperatures increased by about 2 degrees F (1.1 degrees C) from 1880 through 2015.  That this change was caused by humans is not a subject of scientific debate, nor is the likelihood of vast economic and human disruption of the trend continues unchecked.  The need for action is greater than ever-and so is our ability to have a real impact.

As past UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon put it, “There can be no Plan B, because there s no Plant B.” Our planet belongs to all of us, and to our children, and to their children.  It is for all of us to protect, and for all of us in Rotary to make a difference.

Breast Cancer:
Breast Cancer is the leading type of cancer in women. According to WHO, one in every 8 women in US is at the risk of developing a breast abnormality in her life time. It is well-established that early diagnosis is very critical in saving a life of a cancer patient. NIRAMAI have developed a new cancer screening software that uses machine intelligence over thermography images to enable a low cost, easy to use, portable solution and requires minimal human supervision. This solution can detect cancer at a much earlier stage than traditional diagnostic methods and self-examination and can therefore improve survival rates. The method of breast cancer screening can detect tumors 5 times smaller than what clinical exam can detect, is non-contact, painless and free of any radiation, apart from being low-cost, and universally accessible. With this solution, women of all age groups can undergo frequent screening without any side-effects.

Niramai : A Novel Breast Cancer Screening Solution

NIRAMAI solution uses a high resolution thermal sensing device and a cloud hosted analytics solution for analysing the thermal images. Their SaaS solution uses big data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning for reliable, early and accurate breast cancer screening. The innovative methods used in  solution have led to multiple US patents. Their novel algorithms have also been peer-reviewed in international scientific conferences.

Their cancer screening tool, SMILE, has been tested on 300 patients data from 2 hospitals and one diagnostic center. Early results from these tests indicate very high accuracy that is comparable and sometime better that Mammography.

They have started 2 clinical trials with established hospitals to perform large scale, statistically significant clinical trials. They are working with multiple partners to make their solution commercially available.

Some unique aspects of the solution are:

  • More accurate than physical examination.

  • Detects cancer long before a lump can be felt.

  • No harmful radiation.

  • No-touch, non-invasive, not painful.

  • Works for women of all ages, even below 40 years.

  • Portable, light, small screening device.

  • Automated detection using Machine Intelligence.

Gift of Life Project

To Give A New Lease Of Life To Needy Heart Patients.

Rtn. O P Khanna, Chairman Needy Heart Foundation approached our Midtown club with a Noble Project.  This year Rotary 3190 & Needy Heart Foundation, have planned to give a new lease of life to atleast 1000 poor heart Patients against 950 achieved last year.

To achieve this objective,  Needy Heart foundation  have  signed  MOUs with all the major cardiac Hospitals in Bangalore, like Fortis, Jayadeva, Manipal , Narayana Hrudayalaya, Columbia Asia, Mahaveer Jain, Ramaiah and B G S Global   Hospitals for heart surgeries to be done at highly subsidized rates for the needy poor heart patients.

It is heartening to note that against an expenditure of about Rs 3 to 4 lakhs for a normal bye-pass surgery in a modern cardiac hospital in Bangalore, the average subsidized rate —-agreed to by above mentioned top eight cardiac Hospitals is about Rs 100,000/- per patient for most of the heart ailments.(It varies from Rs 85,000 to 125000 per patient depending on type of heart ailment).

Further these Hospitals have agreed that out of the above, if the Sponsorer  shares  Rs 35,000/-, they will raise the balance about Rs 65000/- through their social work cells & associated NGOs like Needy Heart Foundation for such cases.

Midowner Trust contributed Rs.7,00,000/- towards this great cause of saving 20 Heart Patients lives.

On Sunday, 25th Mar 2018, President Uday Masturlal and Ann Sejal Masturlal were part of the Panel Discussion on ” Human Aspirations in the Millenium” program at Taj Vivanta, Trinity Circle, Bangalore  and handed over the Donation.
